Blah Before The Storm... January 31, 2011 & Update Pics

So it's definately the winter blahs here in northwest Ohio right now, but everyone is bracing for a powerful storm. I thought I'd take a few blah pics and see what updates I can add after thins get more interesting... especially if we get the freezing rain mix where you get those amazing ice pictures from :) Not that I want to loose electricity, but it sure looks pretty!

Well as you can see, aside from the mass amt of snow, we didn't get much excitement as we may have in the way of ice. This last pic above you can spot a teenie tiny bit collected on the top of the little branches, but nothing like it could have been. I will just be happy we have a warm home and am inside :)

Little Things January 30, 2011

It's the little things in life that give us such joy, isn't it? I wanted to share some new favorite little things that are making me happy.

Now be warned, it's a little early yet for a Valentine's post, and I do realize this... BUT it's so precious and well made I wanted to share a recent Etsy purchase in case your little one needs one of these keepsake valentine's too. :)

Nataley of course is going to be the recipient of this beautiful valentine I purchased from Sea Treasure Studio off of Etsy. She's based in California and my purchase arrived in a blink of an eye, even personalized with Nataley's name on the back of the shell. And yes, real shells and beads and glitter all decorate this mini masterpiece making it something to be cherished in Nats room for quite some time to come. I can't help but giggle a little to think of Nataley's face when she opens her valentine. You know that girl of mine is in love with all things beautiful and this certainly applies!

Now I don't think I could switch to a completely different subject matter more, but I've been meaning to show off one of my Christmas presents. This was a late arrival, coming from China, but the kids just love when I use it.

The kids laugh and exlaim, ''MOMMY! You're going to RUIN your NEW LENS!'' everytime I pour coffee into my new mug. Yes, not a lens, but a coffee mug :)

For me the highlight was actually the box. Having purchased many Canon lenses in the past, The box is just a perfect match... with the exception of course it reading CUPLENS and not Canon. These can be purchase any number of places by searching Cup Lens, and are available for you Nikon users as well.

Making Changes January 24, 2011

I'm making changes to my business. There's the short, and long version. The short of it all is I am no longer going to be offering studio portraiture and am following where the business has lead me, with more weddings, and more whimsy.

And then there's the long version...

Change is good, right? Well then why do we hate it so much of the time? It's difficult, for me, to adjust my mindset.

Over the past 13 years I have experienced many changes in my photography. I was just a kid when I got my first $60 for a soccer photo and worked all around taking pics of 'cute soccer guys' in the MLS :) Then I met the cutest guy of all and married him and soon my work was commercial, photos for websites. A few kids later and my commercial work was now fashion in nature, and soooo fun. But this got me realizing how much fun portraiture could be!!! And then my youngest was in school full time and it was time to go back to work full time.

When I opened my park place studio three years ago I was very focused on newborn through prek indoor portraits. I did a few outdoor pics for seniors as well, but I'd say at least 90% of my photography was indoor studio lighting, and yes, I rocked at it :)

And then things began to change on me, at a pace I could not have ever dreampt. My little 'mini' special edition whimsy sessions began to sell out within a blink of an eye, with new specials being added. Last summer I quadrupled the number of whimsy pics I did. This year I'm offering whimsy pics all summer long, and can't wait!

And then another curious thing happened... I went from turning weddings away because I hated to do them, to falling in love with wedding photography and taking on more and more. Now I get downright giddy booking new couples for their big day!

Now weddings and whimsy pics have something very obvious in common - natural light, no studio lighting needed. And I find that, while not at all my intentions, my studio is going unused more and more. Last year under 5% of my sessions had any type of indoor pictorials done, 95% being on location or natural light photos.

Now I LOVE my studio space. I LOVE my dressing room, my viewing/waiting area, I love having MY space. But I just can no longer argue with these numbers, and the projected studio portrait sessions, or rather the lack thereof.

So hence why I will no longer be offering studio sessions. I know, you're broken hearted because you've been meaning to schedule a session, right? lol, well never fear, I'm still happy to schedule weddings, seniors, whimsy, and natural light sessions... but I'm just done with the indoor stuff. Eventually I plan to shut the door completely to my studio space, as for the same reasons - I'm not using it, and it doesn't make sense to pay $$$$ in rent and associated costs just because my kids think its cool and I decorated it so cute :) But I know it will take awhile to get things reorganized and I have a lot of work ahead for me. In the mean time, Spring and Summer sessions are filling up, so don't forget to call (419) 234-8587 and get on the books!
